The Sphenoid Bone: The Keystone of Balance in Body, Mind, and Spirit

Deep within the center of your skull rests an extraordinary structure—the sphenoid bone. Often described as the keystone of the cranium, the sphenoid is a butterfly-shaped bone that connects with nearly every other cranial bone. Its central location and unique shape make it both an architectural and energetic cornerstone of your overall wellbeing.
The Anatomical Significance of the Sphenoid
The sphenoid bone’s position is profoundly important. It sits at the base of the skull, behind the eyes touching the frontal, temporal, parietal, occipital, ethmoid, and zygomatic bones. Because of this, even subtle misalignments or restrictions in the sphenoid can influence the entire cranial structure, creating ripple effects throughout the body.
Just as fascinating is its proximity to the body’s master regulators of health:
• The Pituitary Gland: Nestled in the “sella turcica,” a small saddle-like depression of the sphenoid, the pituitary is often referred to as the master gland. It governs hormone production, growth, reproduction, and metabolism.
• The Hypothalamus: Just above the pituitary, the hypothalamus maintains homeostasis, orchestrating temperature, thirst, hunger, circadian rhythms, and emotional regulation.
• The Pineal Gland: Located nearby in the midline of the brain, the pineal is linked to sleep cycles and melatonin production, but has long been revered in spiritual traditions as the seat of intuition and the “third eye.”
When we consider this trio—pineal, pituitary, and hypothalamus—all in such close relation to the sphenoid, it becomes clear how integral this bone is to both physical health and subtle energetic balance.

The Energetic Properties of the Sphenoid Region
Energetically, the sphenoid bone is often associated with alignment, clarity, and flow. Because of its connection to the endocrine system, it resonates with the third eye (ajna) and crown chakras, centers tied to intuition, vision, and higher consciousness.
When this area is balanced, individuals may experience:
• A sense of inner clarity and expanded awareness
• Improved regulation of sleep, mood, and stress responses
• Harmonized hormonal rhythms
• A deeper feeling of being “in flow” with life’s cycles
When imbalances occur, however, people may notice disrupted sleep, chronic stress, migraines, anxiety, or a sense of disconnection from themselves.
Craniosacral Therapy and the Core Intention of Balance
This is where craniosacral therapy (CST) offers profound support. CST works by listening to and gently guiding the body’s subtle rhythms, especially the craniosacral system—the membranes and fluids surrounding the brain and spinal cord.
Because of the sphenoid bone’s central role, skilled craniosacral techniques can:
• Release restrictions around the sphenoid, restoring harmony across the cranial bones
• Support fluid movement around the hypothalamus, pituitary, and pineal glands
• Enhances drainage pathways for production and detoxification of cerebrospinal fluid
• Encourage balance within the autonomic nervous system, promoting rest and repair
• Invite deeper states of stillness where the body’s innate wisdom can reset and heal
Clients often describe these sessions as profoundly grounding yet expansive, as though their inner architecture has been realigned to better hold balance, resilience, and ease.
Honoring the Keystone Within
The sphenoid bone reminds us that even small, central shifts can have wide-reaching effects. When supported—anatomically through craniosacral therapy and energetically through intention—this keystone of the skull can act as a doorway to greater balance in body, mind, and spirit.
At Flow State Lymphatics, our intention is always to meet the body at this level of deep balance—supporting not only your physical structure but also your capacity to align with your highest state of health and wellbeing.
Craniosacral Therapy may be offered as a 60 minute standalone treatment and is often integrated with other services including Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Reiki.
