Therapeutic Presence Begins at Home: Part 2

What if healing isn’t waiting for your life to become less messy?
There is a moment I think many of us quietly experience.
We look around at our lives and think…
“I should have this figured out by now.”
Maybe the house feels chaotic.
The kids are eating chicken nuggets again.
The routines that once grounded you have slipped away.
You know what supports your nervous system…
yet somehow you’re not living it the way you imagined.
As wellness professionals, caregivers, parents, and humans, it’s easy to believe we need to embody perfection before we have something meaningful to offer others.
But lately I’ve been wondering…
What if the messy seasons are actually where our deepest practice begins?

The Myth of “Arriving”
Somewhere along the way we began believing healing has a finish line.
When life becomes organized…
when stress disappears…
when we finally have enough time…
Then we’ll be able to live according to our values.
But real life doesn’t work that way.
Children get sick.
Relationships change.
Jobs shift.
Bodies change.
We move.
We grieve.
We adapt.
Healing isn’t the absence of life’s messiness.
Healing is learning how to stay connected to ourselves while moving through it.
Therapeutic Presence Isn’t Just for Our Clients
When I work with someone on the treatment table, I don’t expect perfection from them.
If someone told me,
“I’m overwhelmed. My routines have fallen apart. I don’t feel like myself anymore.”
I wouldn’t respond by saying,
“Come back when you’ve figured it all out.”
I would become curious.
I’d help them slow down.
I’d invite them to notice.
I’d remind them that awareness comes before change.
So why is it so easy to forget to offer ourselves that same compassion?
Perhaps Therapeutic Presence isn’t simply something we give another person.
Perhaps it’s something we practice with ourselves first.
The Quantum Coaching Method
One of the foundations of the Flow State Method is the belief that awareness creates possibility.
Instead of asking,
“What’s wrong with me?”
we begin asking different questions.
Step 1 — Awareness
Without trying to fix anything…
Pause.
Take a slow breath.
Ask yourself:
What feels heavy right now?
What has been asking for my attention?
Where do I notice tension—in my body, my thoughts, or my daily rhythm?
Am I judging myself… or simply observing?
Awareness is not criticism.
Awareness is information.
Step 2 — Curiosity
Rather than asking,
“Why can’t I get it together?”
Try asking,
What season of life am I actually in?
What expectations am I holding that no longer fit this season?
What would feel supportive instead of perfect?
If I treated myself the way I treat my clients, what would I say?
Curiosity creates space.
Judgment creates resistance.
Step 3 — Compassion
Notice what changes when you soften.
Ask:
What am I doing well that I’ve forgotten to acknowledge?
What strengths have carried me this far?
What progress have I overlooked because I’m focused on what still feels unfinished?
Sometimes our greatest growth is invisible while we’re living it.
Step 4 — Discernment
Now ask a different question.
Not…
“How do I fix my whole life?”
Instead…
What is one small shift that would help me feel more like myself this week?
What feels sustainable, not ideal?
What would support my nervous system today?
Healing rarely asks us to do everything.
It simply asks us to take the next honest step.
Maybe You’re Closer Than You Think
Sometimes we believe we’ve been standing still because the external results haven’t fully appeared.
But beneath the surface…
You’ve learned.
You’ve adapted.
You’ve gained wisdom.
You’ve clarified what matters.
You’ve become someone who listens more deeply to your body, your intuition, and your values.
Those changes matter.
Like roots growing beneath the soil, much of healing happens long before anyone sees the flower.
The Invitation
If your life feels messy right now…
You’re not behind.
You’re not failing.
You’re simply living a human life.
And perhaps this season isn’t asking you to become someone different.
Perhaps it’s inviting you to become more present with the person you already are.
The Flow State approach Isn’t about achieving perfect balance.
It’s about learning to return to yourself…
again…
and again…
with awareness,
with compassion,
and with the courage to take the next small step.
Because healing doesn’t begin when life becomes perfect.
It begins the moment we choose to meet ourselves with presence.
